Brian Smith

Sheffield-born former architect Brian Smith has been a professional painter for over two decades, known for his keen observation of people and places. He primarily uses pure watercolour, sometimes incorporating mixed media, to capture his Fine Art subjects. Focusing on mood, atmosphere, and especially light, he often depicts the built environment and the lives of its inhabitants.

Smith paints scenes on location or creates more detailed works in his Sheffield studio using sketches, notes, and photographs. Balancing his art with education, he leads residencies, teaches life drawing at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery, and lectures at Hallam University. With 20 years of teaching experience, he has introduced many to watercolour painting through courses and personal tuition. An experienced speaker and demonstrator, his workshops offer insight into an artist’s perspective.
